To Create Your Own Model Railway Village Can Be A Huge But Rewarding Task

You might want to add a town, or cityscape to your existing model train layout, but where do you start? Well, you could begin by surfing the Internet for ideas, or visit a local model railway club, or attend some train shows or exhibitions. These are all great sources for ideas.

To create your own scaled down town or city will require a lot of work and attention to detail. However, painting and assembling kits, or constructing buildings from scratch can be a fun activity, especially when you get to see the final completed structure fitted nicely into a town scene on your layout.

You could also take a trip to an actual model railway village to find ideas to incorporate into your own railway model.

Here are a couple of model railway villages I discovered after a quick search of the Internet:

· The Model Railway Village of Clonakilty, West Cork is located in Ireland.

· Boothbay Railway Village is located in Bowdoin, Maine.

There will be many more, but as an example let’s look at what these villages showcase:

1. The Model Railway Village of Clonakilty is like a step back into the 1940s, discovering what the railway system was like during that era. It is intriguing for young and old alike. The models and figurines on display at the village were built at a scale of 1:24. There was much planning and time spent to depict these old trains and villages.

2. The Boothbay Railway Village is a lot smaller project than the village in Ireland, but it does hold its own importance. The Boothbay Railway Village depicts Maine during the 1950s and 1960s when steam and diesel locomotives were both in use.

How to learn from these and other villages:

Architects from the Model Railway Village took drawings and pictures of the original structures and scaled them down where they began to model the trains and buildings.

This is the same approach that train hobbyists take when they are preparing their own models.

If you are planning to start a model of a certain era and place, it is recommended that you approach the situation the same as those architects who built the Model Railway Village. First examine photographs from the past and prepare your own sketches that are scaled down to whatever size you want to work with. Use sketches and photographs as your reference throughout the process of constructing your own model.

After you decide on a particular era to depict, you will want to search for all of the corresponding locomotives and cars to fit with your model trains and layout.

The most important thing you will want to find out is if your era had diesel trains or steam trains. From here you can begin to construct your model around your locomotives. It would also be advantageous to visit the site of the train you want to depict. Like the above two villages, they are located in the area where they are modeling, but you most likely won’t be able to do that. If you are able to, take a trip to the site where the train is still today or was in the past. Take note of the landscape, ask questions of the people who live and have lived in that location so that your model will be even more specific and personal.

You may want to consult an expert historian who knows certain facts that could be useful to your model. The more specific you can get with your information and detailing, the more accurate your model will turn out, and the more pleased you will be will with the end result.

Constructing your own model railway village in miniature:

· First, know that it is going to take quite a bit of time to construct your own model railway village.

· You will need the correct materials and corresponding models of locomotives, cars, and buildings.

· Decide whether you will want to construct your village from scratch or not. Obviously, constructing your village from scratch is for expert hobbyists, but if you have the money and time then you may just want to experiment on your own with building a village.

· Get all appropriate accessories like model trees and shrubs to accompany your track. This will make the environment look more realistic and true to your model.

· Focus on weathering and detailing to add life, character and realism to the scene.

Creating your own model railway villages can be a great way to showcase your talent for railway modeling. It is just one of the many aspects of this great hobby that makes it so pleasurable to be involved in.
